Betty was 28 and in PIPPIN. Stephen Schwartz had seen her in a few things, loved her voice, and wrote the role with Betty's voice in mind. She would have gotten the role, but the director was a jerk who didn't know her at all. She had to audition nine times before he told her she wasn't getting the role. She was devastated. Kept going to her therapist in tears. Finally her therapist said "Betty, just sing the song in a concert and claim it as your own." And she definitely did!
