Today’s another eclectic day. Starting off with Laura Osnes’ album of Maury Yeston’s songs, here’s My Grandmother’s Love Letters.

I am left with my chunky workhorse laptop, and have decided to leave it at home while I venture out amidst the many strikes in Paris. This does mean…. yep, you guess it… another prolonged period of absence till Monday. I was not exaggerating when I said I would be in a new country every week this summer. My husband is working on a piece on austerity measures and its impact on economic recovery (exciting I know) and I am looking at youth unemployment and social stability - we have yet to find cause for optimism.

When I heard Osnes was recording—as part of her Maury Yeston album—December Songs I was skeptical. Though she has always impressed me, I assumed she lacked the gravitas for the material. (I’m familiar with Pia Douwes’ German-language rendition because I’m a fucking hipster like that). But this track basically convinced me to use the last $90 I had on my birthday amazon gift card to get this MP3 album.

Bob Merrill had an iffy career, but you could always count on one gem in a show of his, whether it’s “Here I Am” from HENRY, SWEET HENRY or in this case; Neva Small (who worked with Merrill in HENRY, SWEET HENRY) singing the heart-rending “What Do I Do Now?” I especially adore her take on the last note. A surprise before riffing was commonplace.

you maybe know Neva as Chava (on the other hand…THERE IS NO OTHER HAND) from the Fiddler movie. This is the only thing I’ve ever heard from The Prince of Grand Street, but it’s lovely!

“Sweet Little Angel Eyes” from Polly

This is a great Disney adaptation of Pollyanna in which Polly’s optimism tackles the civil rights movement, only it’s not as lame as I just made it sound. This song is EVERYTHING. It’s a production number that, aside from the “button” is ENTIRELY A CAPELLA. WITH KIDS TAP DANCING.
