This was written for Babe—a musical that never really materialized—which was about the baseball player (as opposed to the pig).
Patty and Emily hold auditions for the role of Patrick’s Mother in honor of the 1st anniversary of Newsies. Hilarity ensues.
I TOTALLY HAD THIS IDEA 2 YEARS AGO.
Spoiler alert, Kate Baldwin is the best.
In lieu of the upcoming musical adaptation of the 50s sitcom “The Honeymooners” (score by Stephen Weiner and Peter Mills), let’s listen to a previous attempt; Alan Menken tried in 1983, writing BOTH music and lyrics.
I try not to be too opinionated on the songs I post, but DEAR GOD LISTEN TO THIS SONG IT IS BEAUTIFUL AND NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS.
This is a lovely ballad. But I’m a little freaked out that it turns “to the moon, Alice” into a song about a father teaching his daughter to dream and believe in things. As if that recurring gag was never someone punching his wife in the face after all.
But still, I wish he had put this into Leap of Faith or something.

Susan Egan sings a fun medley including: “God Help the Outcasts”, “Part Of Your World”, “A Whole New World”, “Colors of the Wind”, and “I Won’t Say I’m in Love”. It’s a great arrangement and her voice is perfect for everything.
“Colors Of The Wind” performed by Sara Ramirez
Her “How high does the sycamore grow?” is so good it makes me angry. #fuckgreysanatomy
“Watch What Happens” - Newsies Original Broadway Cast Recording
This is a wonderful new song written for Disney Newsies The Musical sung by Kathleen, a reporter who wants to be the one to break the story of the news boys’ strike and also maybe make out with Jeremy Jordon. This is what she sings as she sits down to write the article—a very “Vanilla Ice Cream” premise. Easily the best song Alan Menken has written since “How Do I Know” from Enchanted.
A few other Disney Newsies the Musical thoughts:
John Dosset has great hair.
I loved the set and thought it was well used.
I was impressed at Calhoun’s ability to effectively stage some chase sequences and rumbles—to actions usually thoroughly unconvincing onstage.
I was, quite frankly, offended to see the a scant 11 players in the pit.
Harvey Fierstein’s book was really remarkable in a lot of ways.
Those were the buffest starving urchins I ever did see.
“I Won’t Say I’m in Love” From Disney’s HERCULES. Music by Alan Menken. Lyrics by David Zippel. Performed by Susan Egan, Lillias White, LaChanze, Roz Ryan, Cheryl Freeman, and Vanéese Y. Thomas
I’ve never actually seen this movie and heard this song for the first time at my step-nieces 1st Birthday party…at which point I spent the best $0.99 I’ve ever spent and bought it IMMEDIATELY.
