Flings” as heard on the album Gypsy Meets Gypsy

I wish I had an explanation as to why I was so determined to find a cover of “Flings” from New Girl in Town this week, but the results of the search seem to have been interesting regardless.

Here is miss Gypsy Rose Lee herself “singing” on an album she shared with Sandra Church.  It’s a clever idea for an album, but would be more successful if Ms. Lee showed even a hint of musical skill.  Hearing this, one is shocked to think that Lee has been a character in no fewer than FOUR musicals, all of which presume she can sing.  Luckily, she’s as fascinating as she is tone deaf.

Pop Quiz: Who can name all four Gypsy Rose Lee musicals (or are there more)?

Bob Merrill - Did You Close Your Eyes

“Did You Close Your Eyes” from New Girl in Town

music and lyrics by Bob Merrill

performed by Gwen Verdon and George D Wallace

Would you believe there is going to be a production of this Bob Merrill musical version of Anna Christie this spring at NYC’s Irish Repertory Theater?

A “Cathouse Ballet” was cut when the show tried out in Boston, possibly because it made Anna’s former life as a prostitute appear far more appealing than her present circumstances. The producers went so far as to burn the scenery, in the alley behind the theatre, to prevent the sequence from being restored.
