“Love is Only Love” from Mame (“First Rehearsal”)

music/lyric Jerry Herman

performance Angela Lansbury

One of the three songs cut in previews, this is a song in which Mame explains the various ways in which love strikes in anticipation of her expected proposal from Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside.

In this draft of the show, the song comes up again when Patrick meets his future wife Pegeen (at what is supposedly a party Mame throws in honor of his current fiance).  This charming exchange happens, which utilizes a brief reprise of this song:

Patrick: There’s a little experiment I’d like to try.  Give me you hand.  Do you feel anything?

Pegeen: Sure, you’re squeezing my hand.

Patrick: No, anything different.  Uh, do you hear anything?…Close your eyes.  Do you see fireworks?

Pegeen: No, it’s just dark.

Patrick: Thank God you said that!

AND WHEN I HOLD YOUR HAND

THE VIOLINS ARE ALL A BLUFF

(to Mame) Thank you, Moon Lady.

Also, some hack sings this in the movie version of that musical about two guys who leave Yonkers to visit the city and have a wonderful day.

Open a New Window” from Mame (1968 Tour)

music/lyric Jerry Herman

performance Angela Lansbury, Stuart Getz and Company

Posting because of reasons.  And because this recording from 1968 captures the spirit and vitality of what the original production must have been.

A Penny in My Pocket” as heard on Broadway First Take Vol. 1

music/lyric Jerry Herman

performance Bernie Knee (thanks for the info Jo!)

This is the original Act I closer—to have been sung by Horace—of what was then known as Dolly: A Damned Exhasperating Woman.  The recording is one of the demos recorded with studio singers composers in that day would send out to try to get pop artists turn showtunes into hits.  (Louis Armstrong had such a hit with “Hello, Dolly!” while the show was out of town that Merrick decided the change the name of the show.)

Before the Parade Passes By” was a good move.  Maybe one of the best moves in Broadway history.  Up there with “Comedy Tonight”.

PS: This song reminds me a lot of “How Lucky Can You Get” from Funny Lady

We Need a Little Christmas” from Mame (1996 BBC Broadcast Cast)

music/lyric Jerry Herman

performance David Kerner (Beau),Eiji Kusuhara (Ito), Jon Lee (Patrick), Julia McKenzie (Mame), Claire Moore (Gooch)

I cannot think of a better song to launch a 25-Day countdown to Chirstmas filled with (mostly) Broadway themed fun.  After all, it just (basically) one week past Thanksgiving Day now.  This track also features the scene in between the song and its reprise, in which Gooch and Ito give Mame their presents and Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside stops by.

from now until 25-Dec I’ll post a Broadway/Holiday themed song.  The album image on each post is actually a piece of a larger photo.  The accumulation of the previous days’ “pieces” will be posted at the bottom.

Angela Lansbury - Love is Only Love
111 plays

theatreaficionado:

Angela Lansbury sings “Love Is Only Love” at an early music rehearsal for Mame. The number was cut, but was later added to the film version of Hello, Dolly!

That was a good cut.

My Best Girl” from Mame (1974 film)

music/lyric Jerry Herman

performance Lucille Ball, Kirby Fulrong

Many versions of the Aunti Mame Legend have this incident taking place over Patrick’s Thanksgiving break (with that being the reason he gives for not being in school).  However, the timeline of Mame varies in subtle, seemingly arbitrary ways, between the musical and non-musical stage versions AND their respective film adaptations.  (I touch on some of those discrepancies in this previous post)  I like to think of it happening around Thanksgiving and, in turn, I like thinking of this scene around this time of year.  And whenever I see a ghostlight.

Because I was just thinking about “Before the Parade…”, and because Kathie Lee Gifford has written as many book musicals as Adam Guettel, one of which just opened on Broadway.

Broadway Revival Cast - Before the Parade Passes By

Before the Parade Passes By” from Hello, Dolly! (1978 Broadway Revival)

music/lyric Jerry Herman

performance Carol Channing and Company

The sound quality on this bootleg is astounding (though it does cut out for a bit in hte middle) and Carol in this role is truly an event the likes of which we may never see again.  Posting mainly because it includes the beautiful “oak leaf” monologue (good job, Michael Stewart/Thorton Wilder) at the top.
