Overture” from Annie (2012 Broadway Revival)

music Charles Strouse (lyrics Martin Charnin)

Even though this “Overture” is interrupted in the production currently playing the Palace, the powers that be wisely (and deceptively?) include in in total in the new cast recording (currently only available AT the theater and from the production’s website).  The new orchestrations really are delightful and the recording—produced by Thomas Z Shepard—is better than the production itself.

“Overture” from ANNIE

I absolutely love the shit out of every second of this.

So apparently this has been CUT from the revival?!?!?

Perhaps there are more important things in the world to be concerned about.

I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!

so-theres-hell-to-pay:

I’m sure most of you will recognize this music that was used for a 1984 drum corps performance

OH. MY. GOD.  This might be my new favorite thing.

Title: Overture

Album: Merrily We Roll Along (2012 Encores! Cast Recording)

This overture is the definition of perfect. I wish the show were too, but I’ll settle for the gloriousness of this.

The Overture to Paul Shapera’s “The Steampunk Opera”

Steampunk paid a proper audio lipservice.

Check the whole thing out here: http://mochalab.bandcamp.com/album/the-steampunk-opera-act-1

Patrick Wolf- Overture

Don’t forget how the story begins

Don’t forget

Every lyric here

I know exactly what he means, the particularity of the segment of his life that he is referring to here. He is singing this particular song to himself.

And boy,

oh boy,

can I identify.

And like him, it is a part of my life that I will neither be able to forget nor will I be able to allow its scars to fade from my psych

yet one I am now strangely grateful for.

After all these years

Don’t you think it’s time

It has been a while. And I didn’t feel anywhere near this way at the time.

I used to always try to conceal, run and hide from this part of my past, of myself, yet it has made me who I am. It has shown me that I am different, unusual. Thinking back, I don’t think it could have been any other way. And now, I wouldn’t have wanted it to be.

I have to learn to be more open about it. That will take even more time, but I’ll get there. One day, I’ll be proud- an idiosyncrasy, not something to be ashamed of.

I’ve never genuinely looked at it that way. Tried, but haven’t felt it.

PW you are a kindred spirit, genius and a legend.

Posts related to this song by Patrick Wolf (who is some sort of gay-ish British pop thing?) is one of the most common things-that-aren’t-the-beginnings-of-musicals-but-under-the-overture-tag.  I decided to give it a listen today, and decided that it is sufficiently dramatic enough to live under that tag without my criticism.

Conor.

This is the coolest thing i’ve seen in a while.

well done internet man.  well done.

West Side Story Overture

a Post Script to “Overture Week”, and a rare (perhaps singular) case of an overture being created specifically for the film version, where none existed in the theater.  I think this helped warm the audience’s ears to the music, making it seem more melodic with familiarity and less “experimental”.  And I love that they don’t even try to distract you with the opening credits, just an abstraction of the NYC skyline (that transitions beautifully to the opening shot of lower Manhattan), so one has no choice but to absorb this first pass at the score.

Nine - Overture delle Donne (2003 Broadway Revival)

This is just the same thing from the cast recording, posted because it sounds better and you’ll want to hear it after watching the video.

And yes, I would prefer to post the OBC, but I couldn’t find it on YouTube (and find the mix on this recording particularly glorious on this track).

NINE “Overture Delle Donne”

another wonderful “vocal overture”.  I’m enjoying the Revival’s, though I will concede the production seems quite literal compared to Tommy Tune’s stark, conceptual take on the material.

01 Overture - South Pacific The New Broadway Cast Recording

Not only does SOUTH PACIFIC have one of The Great overtures in the cannon (I would probably rank it #4 behind GYPSY, CANDIDE and MERRILY), but the revival took particular relish in playing it, pulling back the entire deck of the Beaumont to reveal the tuxedoed pit for this and the entr’act (an effect which is mostly lost if you buy your tickets on TKTS and are stuck far House Right).

Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford - Overture

“Overture” from THE LAST SWEET DAYS OF ISAAC (by Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford)

A fun, funky, VERY 60s, “Vocal” overture

…and thus concludes my MP3 postings on “overture” week here at me2ism.  There will be a few more YouTube postings today.  Thanks for playing—theme weeks are fun for me!

happy jesus christ superstar everyone

Love a good 2-for-1.  Holy Week + Overtures?  SOLD!  Though I liked the current revival more than many, it seems, I still believe Jewison’s film is the best method of viewing JCS.

Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein II - Overture (Show Boat)

“Overture” from SHOW BOAT

When I was but a child I HATED Show Boat, based solely on my viewing of the 1951 movie (and being a VERY OPINIONATED 4th grader).  A large group from my High School got comps when the National Tour rolled around so I begrudgingly went. I completely reversed my decision after hearing this.

Hello, Dolly! Brazilian - 1. Overture

So it looks like HELLO, DOLLY! did have an overture…in Brazil.
